SMILING MIND: wandering through the smile of the mind

Milan July 3-18

Milan will host from July 5 to 9  2014 at the Fiera Milano City Congress Centre, the “9th FENS Forum of Neuroscience,” Annual Congress of the European Federation of Neuroscience, attended by more than 5000 researchers from all over the world . As cultural activity connected to congress, the Lombardy Region, in collaboration with some of the most important cultural institutions of the city, has promoted the organization of the exhibition “SMILING MIND: wandering through the smile of the mind”,  that covers some moments in the history of caricature between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries and its close relationship with the contemporary scientific research.

The caricature has played an important role not only in the history of art, but also in science: the neuro-scientists studied caricatures to better understand the relationship between mind and comic, that is, between an exaggerated expression of the body and mental capacities, such as attention and memory. The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, which owns an important collection of caricatures and grotesque heads from the school of da Vinci, is the first stage of this exhibition tour, which covers some of the most important Milanese cultural institutions: after the grotesque heads and physiognomy studies of the school of Leonardo showcased in the Ambrosiana, the path continues with the popular prints of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of the the Castello Sforzesco, the it continues with the eighteenth-century anatomical atlases and scientific works from the Haller collection of the Biblioteca Braidense, up to unpublished scientific works presented at the Fossati Award (dealing with phrenology, anatomy, physiology and pathology of the central peripheral nervous system) on display at the Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere, in Via Borgonuovo. The tour ends in the same location, with a selection of satirical periodicals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, showing how some elements of the scientific thought have now been taken as features of pure visual communication.

The exhibition SMILING MIND is a real journey through a little-known aspect of the history of art and science, which allows visitors to admire some of the most significant cultural sites in the center of Milan. The exhibition is open not only to attendees of the FENS Forum, but to all those who want to take this opportunity for a fascinating insight into the culture of Milan and in the history of books and printing. The exhibition will be open from July 3 to 18 in all locations, and at the Bertarelli Collection it will be open until August 1.
